Biography
I have over 20 years of experience in Washington working on health care policy, public and government relations, and legal affairs matters. Most recently, I served as Chief of Staff for a $2 billion agency that oversees the District’s Medicaid program, the Department of Health Care Finance (DHCF). As Chief of Staff, I managed the agency’s relationships with the Mayor’s Office, the Council, and other local and federal government bodies; the press; and hospitals, clinics, and other health sector stakeholders. I served as a Special Counsel to DC Mayor Vince Gray prior to my DHCF post.
Immediately before joining the Gray Administration, I served as a Disabilities Counsel to U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Veterans’ Affairs. In this role, I was responsible for aiding in the oversight of the $100 Billion U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. I played an instrumental role in reforming the VA’s disabilities claims processing system. Formerly, I served as Chief Health Counsel and Legislative Director to veteran Democrat, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX). While with Rep. Jackson Lee, I championed Jackson Lee’s fight for key provisions in the landmark Affordable Care Act. I also worked as a Legislative Counsel to DC Councilmember Michael Brown (I) advising him on tax, health, and housing matters.
My recent public service was preceded by a distinguished career in private legal practice representing Fortune 500 and other businesses before the Court, Congress and Federal agencies. I ultimately became a managing attorney for a DC-based business law firm. It was during this period, that I built a wealth of relationships with business leaders who over the years have helped I raised over $200,000 in funds for Members of Congress and other worthy causes. I also have a media background as TV producer, news reporter, and communications director for a trade association.
My wife, Raheemah, a senior civil rights attorney, and I reside in the District near Capitol Hill. As a long time DC resident, I have been involved with numerous civic organizations in Washington, DC, including the DC Democratic Party and the Howard University Alumni Association.
